Keyhole Cancer Appeal
2014 – 2017
Delivering state-of-the-art keyhole surgery for cancer and beyond

In early 2017, the Foundation proudly reached its ambitious £600,000 target for the Keyhole Cancer Appeal. By October of that year, the hospital’s new, cutting-edge endoscopy suite was open—equipping surgeons to perform the latest and most complex keyhole procedures for both cancer and general surgery patients.
At the heart of the suite are some of the most advanced camera systems in Europe, producing top-quality 3D images. For the first time, all systems in the operating theatre are centrally controlled via touch screens, eliminating the need for traditional pipes, tubes, and wires. Surgeons can instantly access digital X-rays and body scans on-screen, while operations can be filmed and stored as part of the patient’s medical records.
The suite also includes a two-way video conferencing facility, invaluable for medical education, enabling students to observe intricate surgical techniques in real time.
As always, the success of the appeal was driven by the incredible generosity and creativity of supporters—fundraising through everything from gala balls and music events to bike rides, karting nights, a naked rollercoaster ride, and even a charity walk down Southend Pier.
